Synthetic Organic Chemist - Bristol, UK (closes May 25, 2012)


Ascent Scientific, an Abcam company, is an innovative, dynamic and fast-growing biochemical company, committed to providing high-quality research tools to the scientific community. We are based in Avonmouth near Bristol and offer a range of biochemicals including agonists, antagonists, ion channel modulators, enzyme inhibitors and more.

We are now looking for two newly qualified PhDs or graduate chemists with relevant work experience to manufacture our high quality compounds, maintain and improve our manufacturing capability and to assist in the pursuit of business opportunities.

In these roles you will:

  • Manufacture a wide variety of complex organic molecules to the required level of purity and within the necessary timescales
  • Carry out chemical reactions whilst conforming to all the safety/hygiene requirements
  • Collect all the necessary analytical data in a cost effective manner whilst liaising with the analytical/QA department during compound handover
  • Help maintain, improve and establish systems for the efficient running of the laboratory
  • Carry out risk/COSHH assessments of all laboratory tasks to ensure a safe working environment
  • Help to ensure the laboratory is maintained to a high degree of cleanliness and tidiness
  • Utilise and help in the development of electronic data collection.
  • Accurately plan and cost projects (budgeted and actual figures) in order to issue quotes and assess profitability
  • Ensure lab books are up-to-date, accurate and completed to guidelines
  • Assimilate and present data in the appropriate data packs
  • Keep chemical/intermediate records up-to-date and maintain consumable levels
  • Suggest cost savings, help maintain equipment and minimise spending
  • Search for synthetic information, asses literature/in-house routes and suggest new catalogue targets for evaluation
  • Network with other business contacts to assist in forging new business connections
  • Be proactive in suggesting new business ideas/areas of possible development.

You will:

  • Be a newly qualified PhD within a chemistry field or a graduate chemist with relevant work experience
  • Have hands-on experience within a synthetic chemistry laboratory
  • Have familiarity with common analytical tools and interpretation
  • Have a good level of synthetic chemistry knowledge
  • Be detailed in your way of working and have excellent record keeping skills
  • Have high housekeeping and health & safety standards
  • Have financial and commercial acumen
  • Have good IT skills (including Excel)
  • Be strongly focused on deadlines
  • Be a team worker in a busy, fun environment.
